15 Self-Care Tips for Stressed Moms

Updated: Jan 15

Practicing self-care involves recognizing the love that surrounds you and dedicating time solely for yourself. It's a personal journey of daily rituals and positive affirmations that reinforce the importance of self-love and care.

As we navigate through the global pandemic, the longing for self-love and self-care has become more profound. These challenging times have impacted everyone, with mothers particularly in need of self-care tips.

Moms are juggling way more than they ever have, and they were already juggling too much even before the chaos started.

Like all other moms, I would walk on fire for my kids. But I don’t necessarily want to spend every minute of every day with them. And I certainly don’t want to be responsible for helping them learn common core math. The. Struggle. Is. Real.

I’ve been living the dream with two teenagers and a 6-year-old this past year. The fighting is off the charts. We ALL swear now, even the 6-year-old.

Don’t get me wrong, we have enjoyed the slower pace and I truly do enjoy spending time with my kids, but you know what I’m talking about here.

One of my favorite ways to unplug and save my sanity, is to read and take a hot Epsom salt bath with essential oils.

Isn't this bathtub beautiful? Does it make you happy just looking at it?

If you haven’t been taking the time and effort to care for yourself this past year, you may feel extremely lonely, sad, overwhelmed, exhausted, and angry. It’s difficult to even consider taking the time for self-care when you’re living a busy, chaotic life. The need to get everything done and to say yes to everyone is starting to take your focus away from the most important person in the world – you.

Personally, I know I need to boost my self-care routine when:

  • the neighbors can hear the shouting from inside the house (with all the windows closed)

  • the tears are flowing (mine and hers) because I’m not qualified to teach 1st grade

  • the health coach mom lets them eat potato chips and ice cream for dinner

  • the empty wine bottles are piling up in the recycle bin

  • the teenagers blame all their problems on me because I’m the worst mom ever

  • the teenager with a newly acquired driver’s permit needs more practice

  • the missing assignment emails keep showing up in my inbox

I’m going to show you ways to put yourself first again and start loving yourself more. These self-care tips are something you can do any time of the day and will help boost your confidence to an all-new high.

15 Self-Care Tips for Stressed Moms

  1. Unplug the electronics and sit with yourself in silence for 15 minutes meditating or thinking about all of the positive compliments you received today.

  2. Start each day with a positive affirmation. You can print these out and place them around the home for you to see during the start, middle, and end of your day.

  3. Stop comparing yourself with others. This is your life and you’re living it the best way possible, it’s important to stop the comparison game to practice self-love.

  4. End all toxic relationships immediately and don’t feel bad. It’s important that you put yourself first when practicing self-care and that may mean ending toxic relationships in real life and online.

  5. Celebrate every win you have every day. No matter how big or small your wins are, make sure you celebrate them! If the kids are alive at the end of the day, celebrate! If they’ve done all their schoolwork and eaten at least one good meal that day, celebrate extra hard.

  6. Embrace what makes you special by jotting down something in a journal every day that you love about yourself.

  7. Start a gratitude journal where you’ll write down things you’re grateful for, and what you love about yourself and your life.

  8. Conquer something new! It’s such an excellent feeling when we get outside of our comfort zone and win at something new! I’m learning how to practice Reiki. I can’t wait to share with you when I’m qualified.

  9. Make sure to take time out during your day. You can do this by taking a warm bath or shower at the end of your day to be alone under the warmth of hot water. Water does have spectacular healing powers. Use tea tree oil either in your bath or when you get out because it helps to dissipate negative energy.

  10. Be patient with yourself as you work to succeed at something new, build a business, or perhaps master a new skill. Stop being in a race against time or with yourself. And be more patient with your kids too. This is hard on everyone.

  11. Reach out to someone who matters to you and exudes positivity. Have a nice phone call or schedule a lunch date to simply spend some time with them. It’s important to still act like a human being, even during a pandemic.

  12. Remember to forgive yourself for anything you may be giving yourself a hard time about. We all make mistakes, so forgive yourself, dust it off, and remember that you’re worthy of forgiveness. And forgive your kids, even when they constantly remind you how bad a job you’re doing.

  13. Stop needing approval from others as a means to feel confident and loved. Start giving yourself permission to be confident and happy just the way you are.

  14. Set realistic expectations for yourself. When you set unrealistic expectations you set yourself up for failure.

  15. Start speaking kinder to yourself whenever you’re listening to your inner dialogue. Don’t let negative self-talk be a part of your day anymore, only practice loving thoughts.

These are just a starting point to get you practicing more self-care every day. Once you’ve selected a few self-care tips in your life and you start implementing them, you’ll find that your confidence is boosted and that you feel better than ever before.
